Shillong (Meghalaya), April 27: The 5th Meghalaya State League turned into a goal fest despite heavy rain today, with Shillong Lajong FC, Nangkiew Irat SC, and Khimusniang SC posting crushing wins while upsets and washouts added fresh twists to the group battles.
Torrential weather made conditions tough across Meghalaya, forcing the Group F tie between Lawbah SC and Mishon SSCC in Mairang to be postponed due to an unplayable pitch. But the rain could not stop the fireworks elsewhere.
At the SSA Stadium, Khimusniang delivered the statement of the day by hammering Umkaber SCC 9-0 in Group A, with Primrose Lamat scoring twice to take his tally to nine goals. Shillong Lajong showed their championship pedigree in Wahiajer, breaking open a tight Group E contest to beat Iatyllilang Lumsehkot CSC 5-0, captain Wilbert D Marbaniang netting deep in stoppage time. Nangkiew Irat matched that margin at the MFA Ground, sweeping past Mawlum Tyrsad SCC 5-0 in Group B thanks to a late hat-trick from super sub Wallamsuk Nongkhlaw.
The day also produced surprises. In Mawkyrwat, Mawlarshong SC held giants Rangdajied United FC to a 0-0 draw in Group H, remaining unbeaten against the 2023 champions. Williamnagar saw previously perfect Janepih YSCA stunned by a goalless draw with Balmanduri FC. Khliehriat witnessed a comeback as Thangskai Tiger SC recovered from a goal down to beat Jalaphet Moochut Pyrdung SC 2-1 with an 87th-minute winner. Amlarem SC also took three points in Group C, defeating Lamin XI SCC 3-1 behind a Marshial Nongrum brace.
The league continues tomorrow with eight fixtures at 3 pm, including Mawlai SC against Laskein SCSC in Amlarem and Langsning FC facing Umlakro SC in Mairang.
