Apartment owners in Guwahati and the Northeast are facing a dire situation, with housing societies exhibiting authoritarian behavior and creating a reign of terror. The majority of these societies operate without following established norms, making them a platform for personal vendettas and unaccountable financial dealings.
Numerous legal cases have been filed against these societies, but the issue persists due to the incompetence and lack of experience among society members. Many individuals take up positions in housing societies solely for status, as they feel marginalized and powerless in the larger society. This desire for status often leads them to abuse their power.
Some society members have been known to act as self-appointed khap panchayats, issuing punishments to flat owners who fail to adhere to their diktats. These punishments can be arbitrary and unfair, reflecting the society’s lack of accountability.
A significant number of housing societies operate without valid registration from the registrar of societies. Despite this, the government has failed to take action against these societies, leaving apartment owners vulnerable to exploitation.
Residents are now demanding greater transparency and accountability from these societies.
They want:
Regular Audits: To ensure proper management of funds.
Free and Fair Elections: To prevent the dominance of rowdy elements.
Clear Bylaws: To prevent arbitrary rulemaking.
Government Oversight: To prevent societies from overstepping their authority.
Until these demands are met, apartment owners in Guwahati and the Northeast will continue to live in fear of their own housing societies.
