Tura(Meghalaya), Jan 18: An under trial prisoner, who was being produced in the Sessions Court in the town of Tura, escaped after loosening the bars of the ventilators of the toilet.
The incident took place on Thursday at around 2:30 pm when the UTP, identified as Bath N Marak (32) asked to be excused to relieve himself.
Upon entering the washroom in the premises of the Court, Marak quickly broke through the bars of the ventilator from where he was able to escape undetected.
He had earlier been kept under custody in the premises of the Court after being brought from the jail. When he went to the bathroom and did not come out for a long time, the on duty sentry, sensing something amiss broke open the washroom door and found the prisoner missing.
The UTP was a former member of notorious criminal, William A Sangma’s group. Marak has multiple cases of kidnapping, extortion among other criminal charges against his name.
“His case has been charge-sheeted and he was produced in Court on the same matter. However he was able to take advantage of the loose bars on the ventilator and escaped. A search is currently on for the escaped prisoner,” confirmed superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
The SP further stated that multiple search parties made rounds to find the UTP without success.
“In the meantime, a team lead by an ASP has been entrusted with searching for the escaped prisoner. Information has also been shared with all PS’ in the state as well as Assam. An inquiry into the incident has been constituted headed by a gazetted officer and a case against the prisoner has also been filed,” added the SP.
