Shillong (Meghalaya), May 12: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Professor Nirmalendu Saha, Dean of the School of Life Sciences at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya, and Pranjal Sharma, a private person from Guwahati, Assam, in connection with a bribery case.
According to the CBI, the accused were caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹3.43 lakh at the Guwahati University guest house. The agency had registered a case against them on June 11, 2025, based on source information about corrupt practices.
The CBI alleges that Pranjal Sharma, in collusion with Professor Saha and unknown others, facilitated the professor’s obtaining undue advantage in awarding supply orders of scientific equipment and laboratory items.
The agency conducted searches at two locations, recovering incriminating documents. The arrested accused will be produced before the Competent Court at Guwahati today.
The CBI’s action is part of its efforts to crack down on corruption and ensure accountability in public institutions. The investigation is ongoing, with the agency working to gather more evidence and build a strong case against the accused.
