      BJP legislator Biswajit Daimary becomes new Assam Speaker

      Guwahati ( Assam ),May 21: Former Rajya Sabha MP and BJP MLA Biswajit Daimary was on Friday unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.

      Daimary is the first person belonging to the Bodo tribe to elected to the coveted position .

      Earlier ,Daimary had submitted his nomination on Thursday in presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass in the assembly secretariat.

      The Congress-AIUDF coalition had not put any candidate for the speaker’s post.

      With no other nomination, pro-tem Speaker Phani Bhusan Choudhury announced Daimary as the new speaker and handed over the charge to him.

      Thanking everyone, the newly elected speaker said, “I believe I will be able to give a strong and positive message from the House to the people of Assam. All the MLAs will be able to speak their mind here. I will give equal chance to everyone as per the rule.”

      Congratulating Daimary, CM Sarma said many eminent personalities had become the speaker of Assam assembly and they added to the prestige and glory of the chair.

      Other leaders like former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Congress Legislature Party Leader Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF Legislature Party leader Hafiz Bashir Ahmed, BJP Assam President Ranjeet Kumar Dass and AGP President Atul Bora too congratulated Daimary.

      Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi said, “We are very glad that an indigenous person from the Bodo community has become the Speaker. This is a matter of pride for all of us.”

      In February, Daimary was re-elected to Rajya Sabha following switching side to BJP from Bodoland People”s Front (BPF). He contested the assembly polls from the Paneri constituency and won by a margin of 35,852 votes.

      The ruling BJP has nominated its MLA Numal Momin for the post of deputy speaker. He will submit his nomination when the Secretariat will call for applications for the post. Momin was elected to the assembly for the second consecutive time from the Bokajan seat.

      Our Kokrajhar Bureau adds :Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief executive member and president of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) Pramod Boro and the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) have hailed the unanimous election of  Biswajit Daimary as Speaker of the 15th Assam Assembly is a historic and proud moment for the Bodo community in the state of Assam.

      In a press statement on Friday, Boro has lauded and termed that it is great historic moment for the Bodo community as a whole in the state of Assam.
      “This marks the beginning of a new era in the Legislative History of Assam, where a Bodo public representative is being anointed in this important position for the first time. The occasion is a moment to acknowledge years of struggle and sacrifice of all who have selflessly worked towards the emancipation  of Bodo people in manifold ways. The Voice of the Bodo people gets a new sense
      of direction and dignity today”, Boro said.
      On behalf of the people of Bodoland Territorial Region and Bodo brethren across different parts of the state, I offer my heartiest congratulations to Daimary and wish him all success.
      ” I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister,Amit Shah  whose support made this moment possible. I do also express my sincere gratitude to thank Dr Himanta Biswa Sama, Chief Minister, Council of Ministers and MLAs of the BJP, AGP and UPPL for electing Daimary as the new Speaker in the Assam assembly”,Boro said.
      “As a conscience keeper of the collective aspirations of Assamese people in the Assembly, I am sure that Daimary will play a significant role, having had a long innings in public life as a student leader,social worker and a long time Parliamentarian”, Boro added.
      Meanwhile, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has extended warm welcome and congratulations to newly selected Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary,who sworn in on Friday in the ongoing Assam assembly session.

      Addressing the reporters today at a press conference held at Bodofa House in Kokrajhar today, ABSU general secretary Khanindra Basumatary and vice president Khwrwmdao Wary said that the students union extends  congratulations to newly selected Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

      “We do hopeful that Daimary will be successful through his bold leadership as speaker in the state”,ABSU said.

      Basumatary said that ABSU has expressed serious concern over the prevailing anti social incidents happening among the society.
      They said that the students union has vowed to initiate strict step against the presently ongoing anti-social incidents like rape, molestation,murder cases etc happening among the society.
      He  has urged all concern to step for bringing healthy social environment among the society.
      The students union leaders also appeals all sections of communities to maintain social distance and using hands sanitization as well wearing masks to combat the COVID-19 situation.
      The students union leaders informed that the students union is organising awareness programme to create awareness on social uplift in the region.
