Shillong ( Meghalaya), Apr 8 : Veteran journalist and Former Editor of Apphira newspaper Sumar Sing Sawian passed away on Friday evening, April 7 2023, at his residence at Umroi Labansaro in Ri Bhoi district .
He was 82 and was ailing for sometime .
Sumar Sing Sawian is survived by his son.
Late Sumar Sing Sawian was the Chief of Bureau of Press Trust of India and the first Khasi to occupy such an important position . He was also the Editor of Apphira newspaper .
A true proponent of Khasi cultural tradition , Sawian was a leader of Seng Khasi Kmie and was actively involved in holding Lum Sohpetbneng pilgrimage , Apphira Archery competition apart from being actively involved with the radio and TV .
He received numerous awards for his contribution in the field of journalism and for social service.
His cremation will take place on Sunday at Jaiaw Jingthang Briew here . His mortal remains would taken from Umroi to Jaiaw at 1.30 pm.
Meanwhile, various organisations including the Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association and the Shillong Press Club paid rich tributes to he veteran journalist for his contributions to journalistic writing especially in Khasi. .
