Shillong ( Meghalaya ), April 23: 3 persons from Assam have been arrested for allegedly raping two minor girls during Chenga Benga Mela at Gandhipara in South West Garo Hills on Apr 16 last.
According to information available, all the three accused were from South Salmara district in Assam.
While two of the accused were arrested on Monday, the third accused was nabbed this evening.
The names of the accused have not yet been made public and more arrests are likely.
While two of the accused were produced before the court today the third person is likely to be produced on Wednesday.
On April 16, two minor girls were gang – raped by a group youth during the annual Chenga Benga Mela at Gandhipara in South West Garo Hills . Two minor boys, who accompanied the victims were also severely thrashed and harassed.
There has been widespread condemnation of the horrific incident from various quarters including the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma .
