Tura ( Meghalaya),May 24: In another case that shows the extremes to which employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) have gone through, the 48 year old wife of a chowkidar has refused treatment despite suffering from severe abdominal pains since Jan this year.
Employees of the GHADC have been agitating for their unpaid salaries for over 34 months, with the chowkidar in question in the same boat as well. Apparently the situation has come to such that the wife has to make a choice of either the family eating meals or her treatment and heroically she chose her family.
The matter came to light after an activist was informed of the serious condition of the woman, identified as the wife of Rosephika R Marak (chowkidar in the general department), and rushed to meet her to see if there was any help that could be garnered.
The family of at least 7 lives in a 2 room GHADC quarter.
“The husband upon meeting me cried while explaining the situation. He grieved over the fact that he had no money due to the situation to treat her,” said one of the volunteers who went to meet her.
The 48 – year- old woman has currently living in a liquid diet as she has not been able to eat solid foods due to the excruciating pain that she feels.
“We are taking her for a check up tomorrow so that we can determine what the problem is and hopefully after appealing to good Samaritans, we will be able to help her recover. She is using local medicines but it has not made a difference,” added the volunteer.
He added that there were more families from GHADC who were in similar conditions and would need help as well.
Meanwhile the activist later informed her friends through social media and appealed for help in getting the woman to recover.
Meanwhile, volunteers have requested people to come forward to help the family in their time of crisis so that at least the 48 – year – old can return healthy to her family.
