Shillong(Meghalaya), Feb 22: The District Council elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, held on February 21, were marred by violence and allegations of malpractices, prompting the State Election Department to order re-polling in several constituencies.
According to official sources, the overall voter turnout in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections was around 70%. However, the polls were disrupted in several areas due to clashes between rival parties and allegations of booth capturing.
In Jaintia Hills, re-polling has been ordered for February 22 in several constituencies, including Khliehriat and Amlarem.
The District Council elections are crucial for the state’s autonomous districts, which have the power to govern themselves in matters related to land, forests, and culture.
The State Election Department has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure free and fair re-polling in the affected constituencies.
