Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 27: In a significant move, the Government of Meghalaya has introduced the Meghalaya Journalists Welfare Scheme, 2024, aimed at providing financial assistance to working and veteran journalists in the state. The scheme, which comes into effect on Dec1, recognizes the invaluable contribution of journalists to society and acknowledges the state’s constitutional obligation to safeguard their welfare.
According to the scheme, financial assistance will be provided to journalists facing economic hardships, medical emergencies, and other crises. In the event of a journalist’s death, their family will be eligible for financial support to ensure their well-being and stability.
The scheme also provides for medical benefits, including reimbursement of medical expenses, to support journalists and their families in times of need. Additionally, the scheme aims to provide a safety net for journalists who may be facing financial difficulties due to illness, accident, or permanent disability.
