Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 27: In a significant development, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice-Chancellor Dr. P.S. Shukla is all set to rejoin his duties on Nov 29, despite the prevailing tensions in the university. Dr. Shukla was asked to proceed on leave earlier this month amid allegations of mismanagement and administrative irregularities, which sparked widespread protests from students and faculty members.
The university has been witnessing intense protests and demonstrations, with students and teachers demanding Dr. Shukla’s removal and a thorough investigation into the allegations. The situation remains volatile, with many questioning the VC’s decision to resume duty despite the ongoing controversy.
Highly placed sources have confirmed that Dr. Shukla has expressed his willingness to resume his duties and has not shown any inclination to extend his leave period. As the situation remains fluid in the university, Dr. Shukla has been advised to take full security cover prior to his joining. It is also learned that he is sending a formal letter to the state DGP to provide him with tight security after he joins his duty on Nov 29.
Meanwhile, a two-member committee from Delhi, which was constituted to inquire into the ongoing crisis in NEHU, is also expected to submit its findings on Nov 29. However, given the present situation in the university, it is likely that the state government may not allow Dr. Shukla to resume his duties, as it could escalate law and order problems and tensions.
