Shillong (Meghalaya), May 30: Meghalaya launched its first cold storage facility for fish and livestock at Mawblei on Thursday, a 45 metric-tonne unit aimed at plugging post-harvest losses and building a district-wide supply chain for perishable agri-products.
The project, led by the North East Development Initiative under ABK Media India Pvt Ltd with M/s J Mawkhiew Enterprises as C&F partner, is positioned as the foundation for procurement, storage, distribution and retail access across districts. NEDI and the Fisheries Department also announced an upcoming 5-year MoU to strengthen infrastructure and long-term sector growth.
Dignitaries including Fisheries Deputy Director David Khanwanlang, Assistant Director E.K. Laloo, Animal Husbandry Director Dr. A. Chyne, Deputy Director Dr. Hari Prasad Paul and J. Mawkhiew Enterprises proprietor Jenny Mawkhiew attended the inauguration.
NEDI Founder Member Somjit Dutta said the facility marks the start of an ecosystem focused on capacity building, entrepreneurship, youth engagement and community participation, with the goal of making Meghalaya a leading fisheries and livestock hub.
Twelve distributors were present at the launch, with 30–35 sub-distributors expected to join the network to improve last-mile reach. Officials said the unit will help maintain product quality and distribution efficiency for communities in fisheries, livestock and allied sectors.
The next phase of the plan envisions Meghalaya’s maiden processing unit for fish and livestock products to complete the chain from storage to branding, packaging and distribution.
