Shillong , Sep 25: A century later, Meghalaya found its forgotten heroes in Malta.
An Assembly delegation led by Speaker Thomas A. Sangma discovered three more graves of Garo men from the 69th Garo Labour Company at Pieta Military Cemetery — apart from the only known grave of Khew Marak (died June 15, 1918).
The three newly identified are Ading Marak (June 10, 1918), Join Marak (June 10, 1918) and Sangjim Sangma (June 19, 1918).
All were part of the British-recruited labour corps from Garo Hills that built roads and carried supplies for Allied forces in World War I.
“Deeply significant — their sacrifice remained unknown,” Speaker Sangma said after paying tribute.
The team — Deputy Speaker Limison D Sangma, Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V Lyngdoh, MTDC chief Marthon J Sangma and Assembly officials — is on a post-CPA Conference tour from Cape Town, facilitated by the Indian High Commission in Malta.
