Shillong (Meghalaya), May 15: The Taste of Shillong, a homegrown ice cream brand using local Meghalaya flavours, opened its first retail outlet at Dreamland Arcade, Police Bazaar, here.
Founder Sushmi Mazumdar said the idea began when her ice cream shop couldn’t meet demand due to supply gaps. “We started making our own with kitchen gadgets at home. The feedback was positive, and The Taste of Shillong was born,” she said at the launch.
The brand makes preservative-free ice cream from scratch using local fruits and ingredients found only in Meghalaya. Its menu of 25+ flavours includes Khasi Rice, Sohiong, and Star Fruit. The mission: outlets in every district and tourist spot, with a vision to take Meghalaya’s unique flavours to the world.
Smti. Saloni Verma, IAS, Executive Director, Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, cut the ribbon. She recalled first tasting the brand’s Bee Mee ice cream at local pop-ups and praised the launch, crediting PRIME Meghalaya for mentoring support.
Co-founder Mishmi Mazumdar thanked attendees and the PRIME team. The event opened with a welcome by Luziana Wahlang.
With PRIME Meghalaya’s incubation, training, market linkage, and funding support, The Taste of Shillong joins a growing list of youth-led ventures showcasing indigenous products. The initiative reflects the state’s push to uplift homegrown brands and build a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem.
