Shillong ( Meghalaya ), May 19 : The alarming spike in Covid -19 cases in the state continues with 872 new Covid -19 cases reported in last 24 hours .
Among the new cases , 571 cases have been reported from East Khasi Hills district which includes capital Shillong .
With the new cases the active cases have gone upto 5,769 .
In the last 24 hours , 24 more critically ill patients have succumbed to their infections . While 17 deaths have been reported from East Khasi Hills , 1 each has been reported from East Garo Hills , Ri Bhoi , West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills .
Meanwhile , in view of the continuous sharp spike in COVID-19 cases in East Khasi Hills District, and hospital bed occupancy nearing saturation, District Magistrate , East Khasi Hills Ms. Isawanda Laloo has promulgated total curfew in East Khasi Hills District with effect from 8:00 PM today till 5:00 AM of May 31 .
As per the order ,inter-district movement of person is not permitted. No person is allowed to step out without valid reasons, vehicles plying without passes will be liable for strict penalties. Any one in defiance of orders is liable to be arrested .
However , certain exemptions have been given :1. Health services including Vaccination. Person(s) moving for vaccination should be able to produce proof of COWIN registration and slot booking.2. Medicines and Pharmaceuticals,3. Movement of essential goods,4. Movement for medical emergencies,5. Persons travelling on Essential Government duty viz.,a. Medical Teams and officials on COVID-19 Duty.b. Police, Security and Armed Forces,c. Civil Defence and Home Guards.d. Fire & Emergency Services.e. Electricity.f. Water Supply.g. Municipal Services.h. Public Distribution System.i. Information and Public Relations.j.Telecommunication services.6. Print & Electronic Media.7. NARI/ 1917iTEAMS.8. Petrol pumps.9. LPG Distributors.10. Central Government offices as notified by Home (Political) Department dept ,11. State Bank of India, Main Branch and Laitumkhrah Branch.12. Home delivery services only for food/food products, dry ration, meat, vegetables and toiletries will be regulated via separate order.,13. Funeral gatherings, but should be restricted to 10 persons only, with prior permission.
