Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 28 :A leader of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) was killed in a clash between KSU members and non-tribals over Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and Inner Line Permit (ILP) in East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya on Friday evening, prompting the authorities to clamp curfew in the district.
In a communal clash that broke out in Ichamati along the Indo Bangla border in Meghalaya one leader of the influential Khasi Students Union succumbed to his injuries after a clash broke out between members of a particular community non-tand Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) over CAA and Inner Line Permit (ILP).
According to reports available, a number of activists from the students union and security personnel were injured in the attack .
Trouble broke out today after a meeting was organised today at a village in Ichamati which falls under East Khasi Hills District of the state to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
A KSU leader who received severe injuries succumbed to his injuries at a community health centre in Cherrapunjee .
According to information available the meeting was participated by KSU members, non-tribals and others residing in Shella and its neighbouring areas .During the discussion, differences came up between KSU activists and non-tribals over the anti-CAA and pro-ILP demand.
Accordingly after the meeting non-tribals cornered the KSU leaders which led to a clash between the KSU members and the non-tribals . the non-tribals were all well and when attacked the KSU activists .The non-tribals were armed with sticks and other weapons and they went on the rampage.
Several vehicles were also vandalised.
There were also reports of arson in Ichamati and its neighbouring areas .
Meanwhile , curfew has been imposed from 10 pm today in Shillong and its neighbouring areas and restrictions put on internet usage
