Shillong ( Meghalaya), May 16 : The High Court of Meghalaya at Shillong has issued an order in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) No. 4/2024, dated May 15, 2025. The PIL was filed by Kaustav Paul, and the case was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji and Justice W. Diengdoh.
The court has directed the state to take appropriate measures to control the menace caused by stray dogs. The measures include capturing, treating (which would include sterilizing), and rehabilitating them in dog shelters. The order aims to address the issue of stray dogs and ensure public safety and animal welfare.
The court emphasized the importance of transparency and public information, directing that any media reporting on this judgment should mention the composition of the bench by name of judges. This order is expected to bring relief to the public and improve the handling of stray dogs in Meghalaya.
