Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 11 : The health workers belonging to Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union today threatened to intensify their agitation if the state Government fails to enhance their salaries to commensurate with the present cost of living.
These workers who are engaged in the 108 Emergency Service said that they are rendering 24X7 health services to the people of the state but the state Government is not paying any heed to address their genuine demands.
Speaking to the media at Shillong Press Club, the President of Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union, Microlina Syiemlieh informed that the salary of 8,000 per month is not sufficient, as the cost of essential commodities have increased by many folds.
She also said that her organization had raised their demands to the then Health Minister, A.L. Hek who assured the employees that he would look into the matter, but he was sadly dropped from the ministry.
Syiemlieh further informed that their demands were later given to other health ministers but they were also stripped of the health portfolios and the demands are now pending with the Health Minister James P.K. Sangma who is yet to give time to discuss the issues .
