Jowai ( Meghalaya), Mar 30 : Five workers died in an accident while constructing a deep well in West Jaintia Hills district on Monday , according to police sources .
Two persons have been rescued from the 35 ft well at Mihmyntdu village situated on the outskirts of Jowai by the state fire service personnel . The incident took place at around 2:54 in the afternoon.They have been identified as Minotlang Khyriam (40) who has been admitted at Woodland Hospital, Jowai and Deiwa Lyngdoh (18) who has since been discharged from the hospital.
SP , ( Fire Service), A Goenka said that a special rescue team reached the spot and recovered the bodies of five persons from different levels of the under-construction, 35-meter-deep well.
Goenka said that the laborers probably fell unconscious due to the fumes of a disel water pump they were using to draw water and subsequently died of suffocation .
Those who died are Hamklet Suchiang (37), who is a Divisional Forest Officer in Jowai in whose house the well was under construction. The other four are from Raliang village and have been identified as Bunlad Suchiang (34), Niwan Suchiang (48), Phima Dkhar (24) and Danyboi Iano (27).
