Shillong (Meghalaya), June 11: Finally, lady activist Bindas Syiem called off her indefinite hunger strike demanding reconstruction Nongpoh -Umden -Sonapur after assurance from Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on the sixth day here today.
Ms . Bindas Syiem hailing from Umden in Ri Bhoi district began her indefinite hunger strike on June 6 to draw the attention of the government on the urgent need for the reconstruction of the Nongpoh – Umden Sonapur road which is in a dilapidated condition near the main secretariat here but was later relocated by police to the additional secretariat parking lot.
For last few days she has been staging protest in makeshift tent along with few of her supporters.
This particular stretch of road has been in a dilapidated condition for years hindering travelling of the local population.
On Tuesday, Ms .Syiem was invited by the deputy Chief minister Prestone Tynsong and agreed to end her fast after five days after a written assurance from the Deputy CM that the reconstruction of the stretch would be taken up by the government on priority basis.
