Shillong(Meghalaya), Sep 30 : Senior IAS officer Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang on Thursday took charge as the new chief secretary of Meghalaya, becoming the first woman from Khasi and Jaintia community to be appointed to the post.
The 1989 batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre was appointed as the new chief secretary by the state government on Wednesday, a government notification said.
Earlier , Smti Suchiang was holding the post of Additional Chief Secretary in Meghalaya and was also in charge of Personnel & A.R, Cabinet Affairs, Finance, Home (Police) Departments.
Suchiang succeeds M S Rao who superannuated today .
After his retirement, Rao will serve as the Chief Commissioner of the State Public Service Delivery Commission.
The chief secretary will also function as State Vigilance Commissioner, as per the Meghalaya Right to Public Service Act, 2020, the notification said.
Talking to media after taking over , she said that she was blessed and honoured to take over as the chief secretary and hoped that many more women after her who would also serve the state in the capacity of the Chief Secretary ,
Expressing confidence in her team of officers , she said that with the help of her team of officers and guidance of the CM and other ministers, she would be able to move ahead.
