Shillong, Sep 21: The State Anti-Narcotics Task Force has once again cut a crucial supply line of the interstate drug network, seizing 40.12 grams of heroin valued at around Rs 7 lakh in a precision operation in Shillong.
The crackdown followed a specific intelligence input that a consignment was being ferried from Silchar in Assam to Shillong for delivery. Moving swiftly, ANTF teams laid a trap at strategic points in Pynthorumkhrah and intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number ML-05-AD-1301.
Inside were two men, now in custody. They have been identified as Jamir Hussain Laskar of Pangram, Cachar, Assam and Joy Ryntathiang of Umkdait, Nongmensong, Shillong.
A meticulous search of the vehicle conducted under due legal procedure led to the recovery of four soap cases concealing a yellowish powder. Field testing confirmed it as heroin, weighing 40.12 grams.
Both accused have been arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985 after completing all mandatory formalities. The contraband has been seized and the vehicle impounded.
Sources said the ANTF is now working backwards to trace the source of the consignment in Silchar and its intended recipients in Shillong, with focus on unravelling the larger network operating across the Assam-Meghalaya corridor.
