Shillong, Sep 17: Assam made a clean sweep of the team titles on day two of the North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship 2026 at the JN Indoor Stadium here on Thursday, while hosts Meghalaya kept their hopes alive with strong performances in the individual events.
Assam won all four finals in the morning session. The boys’ team beat Arunachal Pradesh 2-0, while the girls edged Mizoram 2-1 in a thriller that went to a deciding singles after Mizoram had levelled by winning the doubles.
In the best-of-five men’s team final, Manipur took the first singles before Assam roared back to win the next two singles and the doubles for a 3-1 victory. The women’s final was one-sided, with Assam, led by 2024 Asia Team Championships gold medallist Ashmita Chaliha, blanking Mizoram 3-0.
The evening belonged to the individual Round of 16 where Meghalaya had reason to cheer.
