Damas (Meghalaya), May 18: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has postponed the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test scheduled for May 29, responding to appeals from teachers caught between classroom work and national duties for the upcoming Census and SIR.
Speaking at a public programme in Damas, North Garo Hills, Sangma said a teachers’ delegation apprised him of the dilemma they face preparing for the exam while handling concurrent assignments. “The teachers are worried and, in a dilemma, given their multiple concurrent assignments,” he said. “Considering their concerns, I would like to inform that the MTET examination stands postponed. Teachers need not worry. We will evaluate the overall situation and reschedule a proper, suitable date to ensure they have adequate preparation time.”
Using the platform to assess Meghalaya’s education sector, the Chief Minister lauded teachers for their resilience despite gaps in professional training. He said government investment has expanded infrastructure and increased the number of schools, but acknowledged quality still lags. “In terms of quantity, we have enough schools, but we are lagging behind in quality,” Sangma noted. “Raising the standard will take time, but we are fully committed to ensuring it happens. However, this transformation cannot rely solely on the government or the teachers. It requires an integrated ecosystem where parents and all stakeholders actively collaborate to uplift our students.”
