Shillong (Meghalaya), March 27: In a spectacular opening ceremony, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the 1st Indian Sailing League at Umiam, showcasing Meghalaya’s growing prowess in water sports. The event has attracted 14 teams, including 58 international sailors from 8 countries, set to compete from March 27 to 31.
Sangma highlighted the government’s vision to transform Umiam into a premier tourism and sports hub, citing significant infrastructure upgrades, including a new Taj Spa Resort and expanded Shillong airport. He linked the league to Meghalaya’s ambitious growth plans, including hosting the 2027 National Games and eyeing events for the 2036 Olympics.
The Indian Sailing League is poised to put Meghalaya on the global sailing map, with organizers aiming to make it an annual event.
