Shillong(Meghalaya), March 17 : Meghalaya has taken a significant step towards promoting natural farming, with a one-day regional conference outlining a strategic plan to integrate it into the state’s economic and social fabric. The event, organized by the Government of India and MEGNOLIA, highlighted the state’s potential for organic farming due to its traditional practices.
Director of Horticulture, Smti. Bansara Mylliemnagap, emphasized Meghalaya’s suitability for organic farming, citing benefits like restored soil health and better market prices for farmers. MEGNOLIA aims to cover 1 lakh hectares under organic farming by 2028, with 79 farming clusters established and over 9,100 farmers enrolled, covering 3,950 hectares.
The conference discussed practical aspects of natural farming, including maintaining soil fertility, crop diversity, and reducing costs. Several farmers were honoured with the ‘Best Farmer Award’ for their exemplary work.
