Tura (Meghalaya), Jan 10: A wave of shock and outrage has swept through Meghalaya’s Garo Hills after the brutal killing of Dilseng M Sangma, a member of the A·chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a prominent Garo civil society NGO. The incident, which occurred in Goalgaon, West Garo Hills, has led to businesses remaining closed on Saturday as the community mourns the loss of their leader.
According to police sources, a mob attacked Dilseng and another NGO member, leaving one seriously injured. The police have launched a manhunt to catch the perpetrators, with three people arrested so far. “We are doing everything possible to bring the culprits to justice,” said a senior police officer.
The killing has sparked concerns of escalating tensions, prompting Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to appeal for peace and communal harmony. “We will ensure justice is served,” he tweeted. The district administration has intensified peace-building efforts, with meetings held between village elders, church leaders, and community representatives.
As the situation remains tense, the police have imposed a night curfew and deployed additional forces in sensitive areas. The community is coming together to condemn the violence and demand justice for Dilseng. One local resident said, “We want peace, but we also want justice.”
