Manipur’s streets have become a virtual battlefield, with ethnic clashes and violence escalating into a full-blown crisis. The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in over 75 deaths, 1,700 buildings burned, and 35,000 people displaced.
The law-and-order situation remains grim, with curfews imposed, internet services suspended, and approximately 17,000 troops and paramilitary forces deployed with shoot-on-site orders. The Manipur High Court has sought the stand of the state government and the Centre in a public interest litigation petition seeking a direction to maintain law and order.
The roots of the conflict lie in Manipur’s complex history, including opposition to the state’s merger with India in 1949 and the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in 1958. This has contributed to deep-seated mistrust and resistance movements.
The ongoing conflict threatens the future of Manipur’s children, disrupting their education and exposing them to psychological trauma. Schools remain closed, exams have been postponed, and the uncertainty hangs over their futures. Chief Minister Biren Singh has appealed for calm, stating, “We are working tirelessly to resolve the issue and restore normalcy.”
The central government has also deployed additional forces to assist the state government in maintaining law and order.
Experts emphasize the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the conflict’s root causes. “A lasting solution requires dialogue, reconciliation, and addressing historical grievances,” said Dr. RK Narendra, a local scholar.
As the situation remains volatile, the international community is urged to take notice and support efforts to provide humanitarian aid, promote peace negotiations, and ensure child rights and protection.
