Shillong (Meghalaya) , Feb 14 : Commercial vehicle operators in Meghalaya have threatened that they would go for an indefinite hunger strike if the state government chose to turn a deaf ear on their demand for reducing the prices of petrol and diesel.
A 48-hour statewide agitation was also announced to be held on February 15.
Meanwhile , DC , East Khasi Hills , Miss Isawanda Laloo in a statement said that the Government is actively considering further reduction in rates of fuel and urged upon the Associations not to disrupt movement or prevent commuters and general public from plying on the roads.
The statement further stated that action will be taken as per law against any individual or group found in violation of law.
Earlier , the chairman of MJACCV had said that If the government continues to be adamant in its attitude even after February 15, we will have no other option but to go for an indefinite hunger strike in front of the secretariat.
Commercial vehicles have remained off the road from February 3, to protest against the rising petrol and diesel prices.
The MACCV has demanded that the government immediately reduce the prices of petrol and diesel as this would eventually address the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, which has affected the common man to a larger extent.
The MACCV’ s demand is not for hiking the passenger fare but for revising the passenger fare in case the government is hesitant to reduce the petrol and diesel prices.
They also want a 50 per cent reduction in the vehicle taxes during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
The government had earlier this week reduced tax on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre.
