Shillong(Meghalaya), June 7: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) convened its Annual General Council Meeting today to discuss critical issues related to the Khasi language and literature. The meeting emphasized the need for greater recognition and protection of the language, with members urging for the inclusion of Khasi in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution.
The society also demanded that Khasi be elevated from its current status as an associate official language to a full-fledged official language of Meghalaya. Additionally, the meeting reviewed the progress of a comprehensive Khasi-to-Khasi and Khasi-to-English dictionary project, which is being developed with financial support from the Department of Arts and Culture, Meghalaya, and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
The KAS has retained its existing leadership, with Dr. D. R. L. Nonglait as President, Dr. K. D. Ramsiej as Vice President, and Dr. Ronald P. Kharshiing as General Secretary. New office bearers were also elected, including Kitbok Nongkhlaw as Treasurer and Dr. M. M. Khymdeit as Secretary of the Publication Committee. The society plans to commemorate legendary literary figures and organize a National Seminar in New Delhi in 2026 to promote Khasi literature.
