Phulbari (Meghalaya), April 10: A groundbreaking infrastructure development is taking shape across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Garo Hills in Meghalaya to Lower Assam. The 20-kilometer Phulbari-Dhubri Bridge project, being built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd at an estimated cost of ₹3,300 crores, is slated for completion by September 2028.
The bridge will significantly reduce the distance between Phulbari and Dhubri from 242 kilometers to just 20 kilometers, cutting travel time from 7 hours to a mere 30 minutes. This will not only boost economic growth but also enhance connectivity and accessibility for the people of Meghalaya and Assam.
The construction of the bridge began on Dec 15, 2020, and the target date for completion has been set for September 2028. The progress of the construction is well within the scheduled date, with approximately 59% of the work completed as of March 16, 2025.
The bridge will be supported by 199 huge pillars from end to end of the 20 km long historic bridge in the North East Region of India. The six-lane road bridge will have four lanes for public commuters, one for health emergencies, and another for defense purposes.
A team of 3,500 workers from various expertise, including high-level engineers, are employed to build the bridge. Despite the challenges posed by rains and floods during the monsoon season, the construction team is making good progress.
The bridge project is financed by JICA, a Japanese giant company, and is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to ensure its timely completion.
