Shillong (Meghalaya), Mar 25: In a significant development, the Meghalaya High Court has expressed perplexity over the slow pace of investigation into the death of a police trainee from Assam, who died under mysterious circumstances at the North Eastern Police Academy in Umiam on March 9, 2022.
Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji, while disposing of the writ petition, directed the authorities to conclude the investigation positively by May 31, 2025, and file the charge-sheet before the trial court. The trial court will then proceed with the trial in accordance with the law and as expeditiously as possible.
The court’s directive comes after the investigation remained incomplete for over three years, with no charge-sheet filed. The court has made it clear that it will not interfere with the criminal proceedings but has set a deadline for the completion of the investigation.
This development underscores the Meghalaya High Court’s commitment to ensuring justice and accountability in the state. Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji’s directive is expected to expedite the investigation and bring closure to the family of the deceased police trainee.
