Shillong (Meghalaya), April 17: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District has issued an order prohibiting the use of poisonous chemicals and explosive substances for fishing in the Umiam River within the Umlyngka village boundaries.
The order, promulgated under Section 163 BNSS, specifically bans items such as bleaching powder, ammonium sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, and fishing nets.
The move comes in response to reports of rampant fish killing in the area, which could cause irreversible damage to the river ecosystem. Any person found violating this order will face prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS.
The authorities aim to protect the Umiam River and its inhabitants, and this order is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
