Shillong ( Meghalaya ), May 13 : Synushar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah of the United Democratic Party (UDP) won the Sohiong by- election by a margin of 3422 votes against his nearest NPP rival, Samlin Malngiang in the results declared some time back .
Lyngdoh Thabah maintained his lead in the all the rounds of counting today .
Thabah polled a total of 16679 votes while Shamlin Malngiang polled a total of 13257 votes .S Osborne Kharjana of the Congress was placed in the third position with a total 1762 votes . Other candidates from TMC , HSPDP and BJP could not cross the 100 figure mark .
The polling for the Sohiong by-election was held on May 10, amid tight security arrangements. Counting of votes for the by-poll began at 8 am amid tight security .
The by-election in Sohiong was necessitated after polls in the constituency were postponed following the death of UDP candidate and former Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh while Assembly elections were held in Meghalaya on February 27.
The voting was held on 3,328 polling booths, of which 1,100 were identified as sensitive and 28 as critical. Voting for the Sohiong constituency by-poll in Meghalaya saw a 91.87 per cent turnout of the total 34,783 voters in all 63 polling stations on Wednesday, a figure much higher than the previous years.
