Shillong, July 22: The Estimate Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Wednesday carried out an on-site review of three key state projects, flagging delays in one water scheme while expressing satisfaction with progress in New Shillong and the IT sector.
Led by Committee Chairman Mayralborn Syiem, members Smt. Miani D Shira, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Remington G Momin were joined by officials from the Assembly Secretariat, PHE Department and IT Department.
At Pohkseh, the Committee found the Water Supply Scheme stalled after the pumping system at the existing site collapsed a few years ago.
“The incident is unfortunate. It is not anyone’s fault. We have instructed the department to identify a new location,” Syiem said.
He thanked the Dorbar Shnong of Pohkseh for providing land and urged the PHE Department to prepare revised estimates quickly so that safe drinking water can be provided to households in the area.
The Committee then visited the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme at Mawpdang PHE officials briefed the panel on the treatment plant and other infrastructure already in place.
Syiem said physical and financial progress was satisfactory and the first phase comprising the dam, main gravity line and treatment plant is slated for completion by December 2027.
The second phase will focus on the distribution network to supply water across New Shillong localities.
At the 2nd IT Park Building in Shillong Technology Campus, the Committee noted satisfactory progress despite challenges faced by the IT Department.
Syiem said the new facility will open significant employment avenues for youth and give a major boost to Meghalaya’s IT sector.
Reiterating the panel’s role, Syiem said the Estimate Committee will continue to closely monitor key public projects to ensure timely completion and proper utilization of resources.
