Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 12: Like every year National Youth Day 2024, commemorating the 162 nd Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, was celebrated at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre Shillong today. Prof Pinakeswar Mahanta, Director, NIT Meghalaya was the Chief Guest and Atul Nikam, Director Nehru Yuva Kendra, Shillong was the Guest of Honour.
The programme started with the National Anthem followed by lighting of the ceremonial lamp and opening song in Khasi titled “Ka Por Tamasha” presented by the students of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre.
Prof Mahanta applauded the services and ambience of the institute knitting brotherhood among cultures. He also reminded the youth about the National youthDay theme of “Sankalp se Siddhi” that reminds us that young mind can achieve anything. In his speech he touched upon the fact that of young minds are now exposed to technological advancements having high benefits but also poses a threat to the value system. So, at this juncture of history youth cannot shy away from theresponsibility of nation building. He also impressed upon the youth to imbibe the idea of sacrifice and unselfishness propounded Swami Vivekananda.
Earlier in his address Atul Nikam congratulated all members of Nehru Yuva Kendra and Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre for taking part in this national celebration.
Swami Hitakamananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Shillong in his welcome address encouraged the youth to draw inspiring from Swami Vivekananda from his words and works. Swami Divyaswarupananda, Centre In-charge, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre proposed the vote of thanks.
The One hour long cultural programme that followed began with an opening performance from Khmih Creative Society, Nongstoin. Stunning performances by the computer students portrayed diverse cultures of Northeast. A self-composed rap song based on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda won the hearts of all.
