Shillong (Meghalaya), July 10: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance on the assault of non- local workers engaged in the construction of the JN Stadium, here on Tuesday, July 9.
Non -local workers at the construction at the JN stadium were randomly assaulted on Tuesday reportedly by Khasi Students Union (KSU) activists who all were sent by the construction company to complete some specialized work at the stadium.
Today, the MHRC issued a notice to the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that 4 cases been registered by the police.
He also clarified that there is no work permit system in the state, but it is mandatory to do registration with the Labour department for migrant workers which should be ensured by the contractors.
He added that unauthorized individuals and organizations checking papers are clearly violating the law.
Earlier, the pressure group had erected the ILP check gate at in RI Bhoi district which was removed by the police.
