Shillong ( Meghalaya), April 7 : Former Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya Robert Kharshiing passed away at Nazareth Hospital at 10.00 a.m. today, April 7 , after prolonged illness.
Robert Kharshiing, was the eldest son of Judith Kharshiing and Martin N. Majaw. He was born on January 7, 1959.
Kharshiing represented Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha between April 2002 and April 2008. During that period, he was the member of various Parliamentary Committees and represented these Committees at many international meets .
As a member of Rajya Sabha he was instrumental in organising a massive gathering of the Hynniewtrep people called the “Dorbar Hima Ka Ri U Hynniewtrep” at Mawphlang near the Mawphlang sacred grove.
As a member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Robert Kharshiing was responsible for the enactment of the Meghalaya Catchment Act to protect and preserve the greeneries and water source around Shillong and particularly those around the Shillong Peak.
During his tenure as the President of the Khasi Students’ Union, Kharshiing was vocal against the influx of foreign nationals entering the state .
His mortal remains will be laid to rest at the Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery here on April, 9 .
