Tura (Meghalaya), Mar 29: In a significant breakthrough, Laden Ch. Sangma alias Chenang, former Area Commander of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Northern Zone, was arrested on March 27 for the brutal murder of Denybirth Momin, a renowned Science and Maths Teacher at Resubelpara Higher Secondary School.
The incident dates back to July 19, 2012, when a group of armed GNLA militants, led by Sangma, stormed Momin’s residence in Resu Mepan Abri village, accusing him of being a police informer. The teacher was brutally murdered outside his house, in front of his wife and relative.
The police recovered four empty cases of AK ammunition, two empty cases of 9mm ammunition, and a letter from the GNLA claiming responsibility for the killing. A case was registered at the Mendipathar Police Station in North Garo Hills District, but it remained pending for years.
The GNLA, formed in 2009, has been involved in various violent activities, including killings, abductions, extortion, and attacks on security forces. The outfit’s primary objective is to create a separate Garo state.
Sangma’s arrest marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Denybirth Momin and his family. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region in combating insurgency and ensuring public safety.
