Shillong(Meghalaya),April 11 : An organisation of the Sikh community in Shillong is feeding the needy people of the city who are deprived of quality food due to the 21-day nationwide lockdown to contain and prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The United Sikhs are not only providing food twice a day to such persons but also serving breakfast and tea.
“Due to the lockdown in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic there are many people who are hungry. We wanted to help such needy people so we are distributing food to them,” Surendra Pal Singh Sahota, in-charge north-east of the United Sikh said.
Sahota informed that a team of the United Sikhs visits Polo, Pynthorbah, Nongrah, Happy Valley and Nongmensong to feed the hungry.
He however said that some localities are asking for raw materials but with the lockdown it is not possible to provide these to them.
Sahota also informed that the people said that while many organizations are serving lunch, they are not getting dinner. “That is why today the team came in the evening to serve dinner at Jhalupara,” Sahota said.
Sahota also informed that so far in the last three to four days the United Sikhs has helped at least 600-700 people.
