Dalu, Dimapara (Meghalaya), Oct 8 : Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today embarked on a tour of the flood and landslide-affected areas in West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills, providing much-needed support to families devastated by the disasters.
In West Garo Hills, Sangma visited the families of the next of kin killed in the landslides at different villages under Dalu C&RD block. He handed over an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased and a special compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the wife of Bijoy Marak, a teacher who lost his life along with his son in the floods.
In South Garo Hills, Sangma held a review meeting with the District Administration in Dimapara to evaluate the relief measures and inspect the damages caused by flash floods and landslides. A total of 40 villages were impacted, affecting 2510 people in 462 households.
Sangma walked 2 km to reach the incident spot in Atisia Songmong village, where 7 individuals from a family were buried alive by a landslide. He handed over ex-gratia to Watison Marak and Baseng Momin, who lost their loved ones.
The Chief Minister assured the affected residents that the government will expedite restoration of road and electricity.
With 68 relief camps operational and 2,630 households suffering losses, the State Government has requested Rs.300 Crore to rebuild the villages of Meghalaya.
