Shillong (Meghalaya), July 22: In a dramatic turn of events today, July 22, 2025, eight Bangladeshi nationals were detained at New Bongaigaon Railway Station in Assam for attempting to enter India illegally through Meghalaya.
The group, hailing from Jamalpur district, claimed they entered India by crossing a rain-collapsed barbed wire fence along the international border where border guards weren’t patrolling at night.
The detained individuals were identified as Babu Sheikh, Ashfaqul Haque, Alamin Ali, Mamun Sheikh, Mohammad Ali, Ruhul Amin, Musharraf Ali, and Asharul Haque. They planned to travel to Chennai for work and crossed into India through Meghalaya after paying approximately Rs 8,500 each to touts for assistance.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) detained the individuals due to suspicious movement and lack of valid travel documents. Legal proceedings under the Foreigners Act have been initiated, and the individuals are in custody for further interrogation.
