Shillong (Meghalaya), July 22: Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has named Shillong as his favorite city in India. This announcement came during a fun segment titled “Spin the Wheel with Ed Sheeran”, hosted by digital creator Shabaz Says.
Ed Sheeran was drawn to Shillong’s distinctive vibe, likening its energy to a high-octane football match between his favorite club Newcastle United and rivals Plymouth County. The city featured prominently in his music video for the hit single “Sapphire”, showcasing Ed experiencing daily life in Shillong – drinking local tea, picking fruits from vendors, lounging at Mattilang Park, and playing football with locals. One memorable scene in the “Sapphire” video shows Ed riding the iconic “Bus Smit”, a symbol of Shillong’s traditional transport system.
Ed Sheeran performed to a crowd of over 30,000 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong in February as part of his global tour. His affection for the city extends beyond the stage, with locals recalling him playing football with kids in a dusty field.
