Khliehriat(Meghalaya), July 21: A court in East Jaintia Hills District has sentenced a man to seven years in prison for committing an offence against a minor under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused, Shambhu Ray, was found guilty by the Court of Smti. B. Khriam, Special Judge (POCSO).
The case was registered at Khliehriat Police Station in April 2023 (Crime No. 27(04)2023) under Sections 5(m)/6 of the POCSO Act. Following meticulous investigation by SI D.D. Warisi, a chargesheet was filed in July 2023.
“The conviction underscores our commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual offences against minors,” quoted Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, as per the court’s direction for compensation to the minor survivor.
Shambhu Ray was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment under the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act with a fine of Rs. 30,000/-. Additionally, the court directed payment of a compensation of Rs. 4,00,000/- to the minor survivor through the Superintendent of Police.
This verdict highlights the judicial action taken in response to crimes against minors in the region.
