Shillong(Meghalaya), Aug 13 : The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today mourned the untimely and sudden demise of the sitting member from the Mawphlang Constituency, Syntar Klas Sunn and paid rich tributes to the departed leader .
The house was adjourned after obituary references as a mark of respect to the reputed public representative on the second day of the autumn session today.
Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh announced the suspension of the question hour and asked CM Conrad K Sangma to initiate the obituary references. The Chief Minister expressed his profound grief at the passing away of the legislator on Sept 10 .
While recalling the the immense contribution made by Sunn, the CM also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members and people of the Mawphlang Assembly Constituency, who have untimely lost their representative.
Speaking next, Leader of the Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma recalled how Late Sunn used to raise issues not only only pertaining to his own assembly constituency, but also those concerning the public in general.
Dr Sangma while paying glowing tributes to the memory of the deceased public leader recalled his high level of deliberations and discussions in the house.
Ever since his election to the Meghalaya Assembly as an independent candidate in 2018, late Sunn subsequently became an associate member of the United Democratic Party, used to raise several questions engaging the chair despite being in the ruling side, Dr.Sangma added .
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that Bahdeng Sunn, as the late MLA was fondly called, was the architect of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme, which is perfectly running well which he had initiated during his tenure as chief engineer of the Public Health Department.
Senior legislator Charles Pyngrope said that everybody in the assembly had benefited from the rich experiences of Late Sunn. He also recalled the immense contribution of the late legislator, who was president of the Shillong Sports Association, towards the development of sports. Pyngrope also recalled how as an engineer with the PHE, Late Sunn had promptly responded to his request and arranged for the supply of groundwater to the people of the Umpling Village.
Home Minister Lakhmen Rymbui stated that the passing away of SK Sunn, who was a far- sighted technocrat and a legislator, was a great loss for the state as a whole. Legislator Process T Sawkmie pointed out that Late Sunn had helped a lot of people with essential commodities during the lock-down.
State PHE Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar mentioned about the valuable support extended to his department by the late legislator, who was the chief engineer in the department.
Legislator Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang, who along with Late Sunn had served in the government as an officer, said the late legislator, who was also the chairman of the Assembly Committee on Environment, was a ‘real leader’ in the true sense of the term, who led from the front. He narrated how Late Sunn would use drones to scan the areas under inspection and take pictures to get a better understanding of the environment.
