Shillong Sep 23: Shillong is no longer watching the tech race from the hillside. It has jumped in.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated Shillong Tech Park-II at New Shillong Township, adding 1.8 lakh sq ft of ready-to-use Grade-A workspace built at Rs 121 crore. It is the biggest IT addition Meghalaya has ever seen.
The opening was held in presence of Minister Sanbor Shullai, Chief Secretary Dr Shakil Ahammed and IT Department officials.
For Conrad, it was a full circle moment. The idea of an IT Park, Tech Park, Innovation Hub was first imagined by him in 2008 to give Shillong a home for ideas, startups and technology. On Tuesday, he called it a dream come true.
And Shillong has already voted with its feet. Phase-II is almost fully booked even before inauguration, a clear sign that demand for Grade-A tech space here has outrun supply.
Day one saw four big signings. Shillong’s own StaffFlex LLP which serves UK clients, Shamrock AI which was already in Phase-I and has now taken bigger space in Phase-II, US multinational Alorica taking up the entire second floor, and the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence under IndiaAI Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and IT which will also be housed in the park.
The Chief Minister said the mix proves the point. It is not just global firms coming in, it is Meghalaya’s own companies sitting next to them and serving the world from Shillong. The park is not just an address for outsiders, it is a launchpad for local entrepreneurs.
He said the tech push rides on a bigger growth story. Meghalaya is among India’s fastest growing states, having doubled its economy since 2018 and now aiming to double again before 2032. That was possible because of stable policy. A 54-year-old state that has seen 27 governments, some lasting only a month, now has its longest-serving government running in its eighth year. Stability, he said, is growth.
But a Tech Park cannot work on WiFi alone, Conrad said, it needs an ecosystem. And New Shillong is building it fast. India’s largest football stadium at Rs 700 crore, the new Secretariat ready by September 2027 creating a planned Administrative City, from zero five-star hotels in 2018 to ten coming up including one right next to the IT Park, from no flights in 2018 to runway expansion that will allow large commercial aircraft to land at Shillong Airport by Sept-Oct 2027 just 20 minutes from the park, and the Rs 24,000 crore Guwahati Express Highway that will cut Shillong-Guwahati travel to under 90 minutes.
The real processor, he said, is people. Fifty percent of Meghalaya is below 20 years and only five to six lakh are above 45. Young, tech-savvy, innovative and globally connected. The government is investing in them through MSSDS, Meghalaya Skills, the first Government Engineering College started two years ago and a skills University coming in the next one and a half to two years.
The message from New Shillong is clear. This is not just another office complex. Shillong wants to be the Centre of Excellence for the Northeast, BIMSTEC and Southeast Asia, a hilltop tech hub where people come to build the future.
