Shillong, Sept 14: In a major push for both livelihood and city beautification, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today handed over the Rs 20,000 one-time relocation grant to street vendors relocated to Barik and Dhanketi.
The grant distribution programme was attended by Arts & Culture Minister and South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh and senior officials of the Urban Affairs Department.
Interacting with the vendors, the Chief Minister said the smooth relocation was possible only due to cooperation from all stakeholders.
“This may look like a small step, but it was one of our biggest challenges. It is not just about development — it is about livelihoods and making Shillong beautiful,” Sangma said.
He said the government has allotted prime locations in the heart of the city to ensure vendors do not lose business while the city’s roads and streets look cleaner and more aesthetic.
Sangma also made a clarion call to tourists and locals to visit the new vending zones, promising that these areas will soon turn into vibrant hangout spots.
“These will not be just vending zones — they will have toilets, seating areas, decorative lighting and even live evening performances. A complete lively experience for everyone,” he added.
As part of the package, vendors will get Rs 10,000 instantly via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), followed by Rs 2,000 per month for the next five months to help them settle during the transition period.
