Guwahati, Sep 14: In a dramatic turn to the sensational Riya Talukdar murder case, prime accused Ramanuj Goswami died early Monday after a failed escape attempt from police custody in Guwahati.
Goswami, accused of brutally murdering his wife and dismembering her body into two parts, died after allegedly jumping from a moving police vehicle at Narakasur Hills around 3 AM.
Police sources said Goswami was being taken from Hatigaon Police Station to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a medical examination when he suddenly attacked the escort team and leapt from the vehicle into a deep gorge.
He was pulled out with severe head injuries and rushed to GMCH, where doctors declared him dead.
The accused was on a seven-day police remand, which was to end today, with police scheduled to produce him in court.
The incident has added a new twist to the case that has shocked the city. Police said further investigation is underway.
