Shillong, Aug 28: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the new Rs 14.55 crore Excise Department building at Lower Lachumiere today, ending 50 years of operations from temporary structures.
Excise Minister Brening A Sangma and Chief Secretary Dr Shakil Ahammed were present.

Sangma said excise revenue has grown from Rs 180 crore to over Rs 500 crore in eight years and could cross Rs 1000 crore soon. He said Cabinet has approved merging VAT on liquor into excise duty to boost collections.
The new single-campus building will house the laboratory, Enforcement Wing, Integrated Excise Management System and Commissioner’s office, improving efficiency and citizen services.
