Shillong, July 24: The youngest karatekas stole the spotlight on day two of the 32nd State Level Inter School Karate Tournament at the Multipurpose Indoor Hall, SAI Centre, NEHU campus.
Nearly 400 children in the 6-10 age group from across the state competed in kumite and kata events today, backed by cheering families in the gallery. The turnout forms about half of the record 802 participants registered for this year’s championship.
Organized by the All-Meghalaya Karate-Do Association with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the three-day tournament is built around the “catch them young” philosophy. Many of Meghalaya’s leading senior karatekas began their careers at this junior level.
The final day will be held tomorrow with the last bouts and the closing ceremony scheduled for the evening.
